If the loaded tongue weight is more than about 10 percent of your tow vehicle's weight, or if the manufacturer's towing section says to use one, then yes. The symptom is the tow vehicle squatting at the back and going light at the front, which takes steering and braking authority away from the axle that does both. A weight-distribution hitch does not reduce tongue weight. It uses spring bars to push some of it back onto the tow vehicle's front axle and the trailer's axles.

Both figures are real and they mean different things. 1,000 lbs is the class the spring bars are tuned for; 1,200 lbs is the most the head is rated to take; 12,000 lbs is the gross trailer weight. You size by your ACTUAL loaded tongue weight, and it should sit inside the bar's class rather than merely under the maximum. Bars run at the bottom of their range ride harshly and do not distribute much; bars run over it are the ones that bend. Weigh the tongue loaded for a trip — a scale, not the brochure.

Adjustable friction clamp — set the amount, or release it entirely. The distinction is worth knowing before you shop. Friction sway control resists the trailer starting to move; adaptive systems let go during tight turns so the hitch is not fighting you in a fuel station, then re-engage on the straight. Neither one cures a badly loaded trailer. Sway usually starts with too little weight on the tongue, and no hitch fixes that.

It uses a 2-5/16" ball and installs on top-mount or bottom-mount coupler-style trailers. Check three things: that your coupler takes that ball size, that your receiver is the right class, and that the shank gives you enough rise or drop to get the trailer sitting level. A trailer that noses down or tail-drops will not distribute properly no matter how the bars are set.

Set aside an afternoon for the first time, not five minutes. Getting this right means measuring the tow vehicle's front and rear fender heights unhitched, hitching, then adjusting spring-bar tension and the head angle until the front fender returns to roughly where it started. It is iterative. Once you have found your settings and marked them, hitching on a trip is a couple of minutes.

Yes — on ice, packed snow or a wet, slick surface. Friction sway control resists the trailer's attempt to straighten itself, and on a low-grip surface that can make a slide worse rather than better. This model's clamp releases for exactly that reason. Also release the bars before backing at a sharp angle, or you load them sideways in a way they were not designed for.
