Roof Mounting
no roof attachment
The Jeep Wrangler JL (2018+) is the original removable-everything vehicle β and rack mounting reflects this complexity. The hardtop, soft top, and Sky One-Touch top each require different mounting approaches. There is no universal roof rack solution for all Wrangler configurations. For hardtop JL models: the most common approach is a full-length rack that bolts through the hardtop using reinforced mounting plates. Rhino-Rack Backbone system, Front Runner Slimline II, and Kargo Master all offer Wrangler-specific platforms. These bolt through the hardtop at factory-scored mounting points (thin spots in the fiberglass designed for this purpose). Critical load limitation: the Wrangler hardtop is NOT structural. It is a fiberglass shell sitting on rubber weatherstrips. Dynamic roof load capacity is limited to approximately 150 lbs β and that includes the rack system weight (typically 35-60 lbs for a full platform). Your actual cargo capacity is 90-115 lbs while driving. For soft-top models: roof-mounted cargo is limited to light-duty solutions. The soft-top fabric and frame cannot support meaningful loads. Hitch-mount or tailgate-mount systems are the only viable options.
