Roof Mounting
bare roof
The Rivian R1S (2022+) ships with factory crossbars integrated into the roof structure β a glass panoramic roof with embedded aluminum crossbar channels. Unlike traditional vehicles, the R1S does not use bolt-on rails or clip-on feet. The factory crossbars are the only mounting interface. Rivian's factory crossbars provide T-slot channels compatible with Thule and Yakima T-track accessories (ski racks, bike mounts, kayak cradles). Rail-to-rail span: approximately 44 inches. Crossbar spread: fixed at approximately 32 inches (not adjustable β they are structural to the roof). For cargo boxes: Thule and Yakima boxes with T-track mounting adapters bolt directly to the factory bars. The maximum dynamic roof load is 150 lbs β and this is a HARD limit on an EV where every pound affects range. [ADD PERSONAL EXPERIENCE] Critical EV consideration: 150 lbs of roof cargo on a vehicle with 0.30 Cd drag coefficient creates measurable range reduction. Expect 8-15% range loss with a loaded cargo box at highway speeds β plan charging stops accordingly.
