Roof Mounting

flush rails with factory rails

The 2024+ GMC Acadia (2nd generation redesign) switched to flush-mounted roof rails on SLT and above trims β€” a departure from the previous generation's raised rails. This is a critical distinction: owners upgrading from the 2017-2023 Acadia cannot reuse their existing crossbar hardware. Flush-rail mounting requires Thule Evo Flush Rail (7106) or Yakima StreamLine towers. Rail-to-rail span: approximately 44 inches. Front-to-rear crossbar spread: up to 38 inches. The redesigned Acadia grew in every dimension, providing significantly more roof real estate than its predecessor. The SLE (base) trim has no roof rails. The AT4 trim includes black-finished flush rails with identical mounting geometry to the chrome-finished Denali rails β€” hardware is interchangeable between trims. [ADD PERSONAL EXPERIENCE] The Denali trim includes a factory crossbar option (dealer-installed accessory). If present, aftermarket crossbars are unnecessary β€” Thule T-track accessories mount directly to factory bars. [ADD ORIGINAL PHOTO]

Hitch Mounting

Aftermarket hitch required

The 2024+ Acadia does not include a factory hitch on all trims. The AT4 and Denali typically include the trailering package with a factory 2-inch receiver rated at 4,000 lbs towing / 400 lbs tongue weight. SLE and SLT trims require the CURT 13424 aftermarket receiver (Class III, 3,500 lbs / 350 lbs tongue weight). For trims with the factory receiver, all 2-inch hitch products install without modification. The Acadia's mid-size proportions make it an ideal hitch-mount platform for families: enough ground clearance for departure angle, enough tongue weight for loaded cargo carriers. The factory trailer wiring harness (included with trailering package) provides 4-pin and 7-pin connectors β€” useful for trailer lighting if towing, but not required for cargo carriers or bike racks.

Expert Notes

The 2024+ Acadia rides on GM's redesigned mid-size unibody platform with a 112.7-inch wheelbase. The roof structure uses ultra-high-strength steel (1,000 MPa) at the B-pillar and C-pillar junctions where roof rails transfer load to the body structure β€” providing confident load-bearing capability. Dynamic roof load: approximately 165 lbs (GM specification). The Acadia's available adaptive air suspension (Denali only) can be raised for loading and lowered for highway aerodynamics β€” a useful feature for managing the 73-inch roof height during loading. The AT4 variant includes an off-road-tuned suspension with increased ground clearance. For roof-mounted accessories, the AT4's stiffer spring rates actually reduce body roll compared to the comfort-tuned SLT/Denali β€” beneficial for lateral load stability on crossbar-mounted cargo. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Using 2017-2023 Acadia raised-rail hardware on the 2024+ model. The rail type changed from raised to flush in the redesign β€” no hardware is cross-compatible between generations. Mistake #2: Assuming Acadia and Traverse accessories are interchangeable because both are GM mid-size SUVs. They have different rail spacing, different anchor points, and different crossbar lengths. Mistake #3: Installing the AT4 factory roof basket AND attempting to add aftermarket crossbars. Both use the same flush rail mounting points β€” choose one system. Mistake #4: Not utilizing the Denali's air suspension for loading. At 73 inches to roof peak, loading without the raised setting requires overhead lifting of heavy items. Raise the suspension before loading, lower it before driving.

Installation Tips

The 2024+ Acadia's flush rail system uses a different anchor point spacing than the Chevy Traverse (despite both being GM mid-size SUVs). Crossbar lengths and tower positions are NOT interchangeable between Acadia and Traverse β€” verify vehicle-specific compatibility. Torque for flush rail feet: 6 Nm. The Acadia's aluminum flush rails have a slightly textured anodized finish that provides better grip than polished rails β€” tower feet are less likely to shift during torquing. [ADD PERSONAL EXPERIENCE] For the AT4 trim with the factory roof basket accessory: this uses the same flush rail mounting points as crossbar feet. You cannot have both the factory basket and aftermarket crossbars simultaneously. Choose one system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What roof rack fits a 2024+ GMC Acadia?

The 2024+ Acadia redesign uses flush-mounted rails (SLT and above). Thule Evo Flush Rail (7106) or Yakima StreamLine towers are required β€” the previous Acadia (2017-2023) used raised rails. No hardware carries over between generations. AT4 and Denali trims have the same flush rail geometry.

Is the GMC Acadia the same as the Chevy Traverse for roof racks?

No. Despite both being GM mid-size SUVs, the 2024+ Acadia and Traverse have different rail spacing, different anchor points, and different crossbar lengths. Parts are not interchangeable. Always verify your specific vehicle in the manufacturer's fit guide.

Does the 2024 GMC Acadia have a factory tow hitch?

AT4 and Denali trims typically include the trailering package with a factory 2-inch receiver (4,000 lbs towing / 400 lbs tongue weight). SLE and SLT trims require aftermarket hitch installation (CURT 13424). Check your window sticker for the trailering package.

Can I use the old Acadia roof rack on the 2024 redesign?

No. The 2017-2023 Acadia used raised rails; the 2024+ uses flush rails. Completely different mounting systems β€” raised-rail towers cannot attach to flush rails. All crossbar hardware must be purchased new for the current generation.

What is the roof load capacity of a 2024 GMC Acadia?

Dynamic roof load: approximately 165 lbs (GM specification). After crossbar weight (15-20 lbs), you have approximately 145-150 lbs for actual cargo. The redesigned Acadia's wider roof (44-inch rail span, 38-inch crossbar spread) distributes this load well.
