Roof Mounting
flush rails with factory rails
The 6th-generation Ford Explorer (2020+) features flush roof rails with a factory hitch as standard on most trims. The flush rail system uses Thule Evo Flush Rail (7106) or Yakima StreamLine towers with Explorer-specific adapters. Rail-to-rail span is approximately 44 inches with front-to-rear crossbar spread of 34-38 inches. This accommodates standard cargo boxes (M through XL sizes) and all kayak/bike carriers without clearance issues. The Explorer's unibody construction (rear-wheel-drive-based platform) provides a lower roofline than body-on-frame SUVs of similar size. Loading height is approximately 67 inches — manageable for most adults without a step stool.
