Why this product

Why the Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar?

The Acclaim is Blue Ox's workhorse tow bar, and for good reason. Self-aligning arms take the frustration out of hookup, and the non-binding latch means you are not fighting it at the end of the day. At 10,000 lbs capacity, it handles just about any dinghy vehicle you would flat-tow.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

That question is answered by the vehicle, not by the tow bar. Only some drivetrains tolerate having all four wheels rolling with the engine off, and the ones that do not can be destroyed in a single trip. Your owner's manual has a recreational towing or dinghy towing section — read it before you buy anything on this page. The Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar connects a tow-capable vehicle to your motorhome. It cannot make an unsuitable one safe.

5,000 lbs. That is the weight of the vehicle behind it — a tow bar pulls, it does not carry, so there is no cargo rating to compare against. Your motorhome's receiver carries its own rating, and the lower of the two governs. Weigh the towed vehicle the way it actually travels, with fuel and whatever is inside it, rather than trusting a curb weight from a brochure.

Four things, and the tow bar is only the first. A baseplate, which is specific to the towed vehicle's year and model and bolts to its frame. Safety cables. A lighting connection so the towed vehicle's lamps follow the motorhome's. And in most states and provinces, a supplemental braking system. Price all four before you decide — the bar is roughly a third of a complete setup, and the baseplate is usually the surprise.

On the towed vehicle. The Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar couples to a ball on the motorhome, so when you unhook, the bar goes with the car and folds against its nose. That is fine if the car sits at the campsite. It is worth thinking about if the car is what you drive around town once you arrive.

Only if they are the matching kind. Blue Ox and Roadmaster baseplates use different attachment geometry, and crossing brands takes an adapter rather than goodwill. If you are replacing a bar and keeping the baseplates, confirm the adapter part number before ordering — this is the single most common reason a tow bar arrives and cannot be hooked up that weekend.

Usually, yes. The Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar is self-aligning, which means the arms extend independently and lock once the vehicle is straight, so you are not jockeying the car back and forth to hit an exact spot. The bar weighs 45 lbs, and that weight is the part people underestimate — lifting it into position is more of the job than aligning it. A second person makes the first few hookups faster, and after that most owners do it alone.

In most states and Canadian provinces, yes — and the thresholds are written in towed weight, so a vehicle heavy enough to need a tow bar this size is usually heavy enough to trigger the requirement. It is also the difference between stopping and not stopping if the connection fails. A braking system is a separate purchase from the Blue Ox Acclaim Tow Bar. We keep the state-by-state details in our legal guide.
