About Allen Sports

Allen Sports is the budget bike rack brand that introduced most Americans to the concept of carrying bikes on their car. Founded in 1967 in Wakefield, Massachusetts by Richard Allen, the company has been family-owned the whole time and still makes the majority of its racks in the U.S.

Allen's bread-and-butter products are the Deluxe Trunk Rack (under $70) and the Premier Hitch Rack. They're not fancy — the trunk racks use straps and hooks, the hitch racks are mostly steel — but they get the job done for occasional weekend rides.

The honest take: if you ride bikes once a month and need to get them to a trail, Allen is the best $80 you'll ever spend. If you ride every weekend with a full family, you'll probably outgrow it in a year.

Did you know?

Allen Sports is still run by the Allen family and the original Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount rack — the one in the yellow box at Walmart — has been in production essentially unchanged since 1987.

Frequently Asked Questions About Allen Sports

Trunk-mount Allen racks use padded hooks that can wear through clear coat over time, especially on painted bumpers. The padding compresses with use. Inspect and replace worn pads, and remove the rack between trips. Their hitch-mount models avoid this issue entirely. If trunk scratches are a deal-breaker, go with their hitch-mount line or a different brand.
Allen Sports racks are rated for highway speeds with proper installation. However, strap-mount models have higher return rates than hitch-mount models — straps can loosen on long drives. Re-check strap tension after the first 15 minutes of driving. For frequent highway use, their hitch-mount Deluxe series is a safer choice.
At $40–$130, Allen Sports delivers basic functionality with trade-offs: steel construction (heavier, can rust), simpler anti-sway cradles, no integrated locks, and less refined fit across vehicle shapes. No tilt-away for trunk access. No tool-free installation. They work well for occasional use but lack the daily-use convenience features of $300+ racks.
Allen Sports is the right call if you ride 5–10 times a year, own one or two standard bikes (not e-bikes), and don't want to invest $300+ in a rack. Great first rack for new cyclists testing the hobby. Upgrade to Kuat or Saris if you find yourself loading bikes every weekend or need e-bike capacity.
